After several consultations and investigations, a patient may still be unsure what to do next.
Each appointment may have addressed part of the problem. What remains unclear is how the findings fit together, whether they support the current diagnosis, or which treatment options deserve further discussion.
A second medical opinion gives another clinician or team an opportunity to review the situation. It may confirm the existing recommendation or identify questions that need further assessment.
For international patients considering specialist care in Chengdu, the starting point is straightforward: what would you like the review to clarify?
Give the enquiry a clear purpose
A request to “review the case” is a beginning. A focused question helps the receiving hospital identify the appropriate department and understand the decision the patient is facing.
The question might concern whether the available findings support a diagnosis, what alternatives to a proposed treatment should be discussed, or whether imaging or pathology needs another review.
If a patient is considering a particular procedure, the initial enquiry can establish what the specialist needs to assess suitability.
The medical team determines the appropriate assessment. The referral’s purpose is to make the patient’s question easy to understand.
Make the records easier to navigate
Original records matter. A short clinical summary helps explain how they relate to one another.
Where practical, a one-page chronology can outline when symptoms began, how they have changed, what investigations and treatments have taken place, and what remains unresolved. An index can then identify the supporting documents by date, type and provider.
Keep translations identifiable and linked to their source documents. A written imaging report, the images themselves and pathology materials are different items, and the receiving team may have specific requirements for each.
This is a preparation approach, rather than a universal hospital submission format. The department will specify what it needs and how the information should be supplied.
Explain what the patient hopes to achieve
Some patients want reassurance before proceeding with a recommendation. Others want to explore alternatives or understand whether travelling for further assessment would be worthwhile.
Those goals should be part of the enquiry, alongside language preferences, possible travel dates and any accompanying family members’ needs.
For referrals involving an overseas partner, it also helps to agree who will communicate with the hospital, how updates will reach the patient and how records will be shared privately with consent.
Multidisciplinary resources in Chengdu
When a question spans specialties, a shared discussion can help clinicians consider the findings together.
In its report of 2 July 2025, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, described 104 outpatient multidisciplinary teams covering 2,048 disease categories. It reported more than 50,000 cumulative outpatient MDT patient encounters by May 2025.
This illustrates the hospital’s established approach to bringing different specialists into one assessment, rather than requiring patients to connect separate opinions themselves.
A second opinion does not automatically require an MDT appointment. The receiving medical team determines whether a specialist consultation, additional review or multidisciplinary discussion is appropriate.
How Panda Care helps
Panda Care works directly with medical resources in Chengdu and supports international patients, overseas patient coordinators and medical travel partners.
We help progress the hospital enquiry, establish the department’s record requirements and arrange the agreed document preparation and language services. As the proposed clinical pathway becomes clearer, we bring appointments, accommodation, transport and family support into the visit plan.
With overseas partners, we agree the communication responsibilities, service scope and fees so that both teams know how the enquiry will move forward.
Clinical decisions remain with the medical team. Panda Care handles the local work that connects the enquiry with the proposed visit.
Begin with a brief outline
